Fast Facts- Given as a charter to the Lords Proprietors in 1663 by King Charles II, North Carolina was a proprietary colony until 1729, when it was bought by the Crown and it became a royal colony.

Their names were: George Monck, Edward Hyde, John Berkeley, William Craven, Sir George Carteret, Sir William Berkeley, Sir John Colleton, and Anthony Ashley Cooper. - Before it became a royal colony it was governed and managed by the Lords Proprietors, whom the colonists did not think did their job very well. -When it became a royal colony it was ruled directly by the king and when he appointed provincial governors the government became more stable. -The colonists often got along very well with the Native Americans, although there were some fights here or there. Their histories were very intertwined. -North Carolina didn't play a big role in the slave trade, because all of the larger plantations were in the lower colonies and they often sold their slaves to the large plantations down south. |
