Elements of Culture
The North Carolina colony has a lot of culture. In this section, we have included examples of architecture, art, food, craft, clothing, and music. Most of this typical of the southern colonies, and will be very common in our area.
Architecture Southern Colonial architecture usually had gables on the side of the building, and had a length of two rooms. They had a width of one room deep, and were two stories high. Rear wings were usually added for kitchens or extra space. A building's facade was almost always symmetrical, and was usually made of wood, stone, or bricks.
Food and Crafts-Colonists ate a variety of foods, most of it home grown. They ate crops, fish/shellfish, bird game, meats, and dairy.
-In their free time, colonists would make rag dolls, whittle toys for children, make cabinets and fine furniture, and create songs. |
Art-Most homes had pottery and China porcelain that was imported.
-Paintings and portraits of the family were found in wealthy households. -Fine furniture was valued among many houses. Clothing and Music-Men wore a hat, a wig, a coat, a silk cravat, a waistcoat, a shirt, breeches stockings, and shoes.
-Women wore a shift, stockings, a hooped petticoat, a hat, a lace cap, lace neckerchief, a stomacher, a gown, a silk petticoat, a lace apron, and shoes. -Yankee Doodle was a popular folk song of this time. -Most Folk songs were made over important people or events, such as the Revolutionary War, or George Washington. -Classical music was usually played at balls and dances. |
